"Cuverville Panorama" - Antarctica. -- (December 20th, 2009)
  • Last week on a cruise to Antarctica we had only two sunny landings. At Cuverville Island, just off the mainland of the Antarctic Peninsula we hiked up a hill. I created this panorama from 12 photographs stitched together in photoshop! (photo taken in December 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Perito Moreno Glacier" - Patagonia, Argentina. -- (December 6th, 2009)
  • Perito Moreno: The most famous glacier in patagonia! I woke up from a nap to see the most fantastic landscape out my window I have ever seen from an airplane! I would be willing to fly it again just to view the landscape (on a good weather day). (photo taken in December 2009) Camera & Film: Canon Powershot S90- Digital RAW

"Inle Lake Weir Fisherman" - Myanmar. -- (November 29th, 2009)
  • Inle Lake is a famous shallow lake in the mountainous eastern part of Burma (Bordering Laos and Thailand) It is no deeper than 6 feet, so a traditional form of fishing involves putting a weir down from the surface to the bottom and netting fish inside! (A Weir is a ribbed-cage used for trapping fish) Unlike most of the fisherman, this one was wearing traditional clothing allowing a glimpse of the past. (photo taken in August 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Burmese Buffalo Boy" - Myanmar. -- (November 22nd, 2009)
  • While driving across the hilly eastern part of Burma we came across many boys tending to their water buffalos, most of them riding them and playing around! I even photographed a boy studying his homework on a buffalo back on the way home from school! (photo taken in August 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Shweizigon Monk" - Burma (Myanmar). -- (November 15th, 2009)
  • Children in Southeast Asia often staudy at a monastery for their formative years - it teaches them respect for religion, tradition, hard work, education, and humility - and it gets them room, board, and education at no expense to the family. Shweizigon is this Monastery/Temple where I photographed this cheerful young student-monk. (photo taken in August 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Putting on Thanaka" - Burma (Myanmar). -- (November 8th, 2009)
  • One thing that sets Burmese people apart from every other nation is the application of Thanaka paste. This cosmetic & sunscreen is worn by many women and children in Burma, and this photo shows a young girl in a small village putting on her morning toilette. The paste is usually made fresh, every day, by grinding the bark of sepecific trees with water on a stone, and then applying it in patterns on the face, and sometimes also the body! (photo taken in August 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Bagan Local" - Burma (Myanmar). -- (November 1st, 2009)
  • Back to Burma! On my all-day tour of Bagan's famous ruins, I photographed many locals, this girl was one of the most photogenic and willing to pose for my camera, showcasing the traditional thanaka - a paste made from tree bark applied to the face as a cosmetic and to protect skin against sunburn. Bagan is a wonderful world heritage site, and one of the top attractions of an archaeological tour of Burma. (photo taken in August 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Dumbo Portal" - Brooklyn, NY, USA. -- (October 25th, 2009)
  • Today I rode my bike from Queens to Brooklyn on a fun tour of foodcart / vendor cuisine! Here is a memento of Brooklyn in the Fall, an homage to Lynn Saville, and a celebration of my continued side project: Portals (please click the link above to see my newest collection of portals images) P.S. & FYI DUMBO is a Brooklyn Neighborhood - "Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass" Camera & Film: Canon PS70 - Digital RAW

"Monterey Gull" - California, USA. -- (October 11th, 2009)
  • At the end of August I revisited California, and captured this nice image of a proud, almost regal seagull on the Monterey Coast. Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital jpeg

"Passionate Kiss" - Tarrytown, NY. -- (October 4th, 2009)
  • A Wedding is one of the most stressful and joyful nights in the life of the bride and groom, making the kiss on the altar sometimes awkward. Here I captured the passion this couple clearly feels, even on this long night! The photo was taken after Jade smooshed cake on Rich's face and then they chased each other around the cake before this moment of rejoicing! (photo taken in September 2009 at Rich and Jade's wedding - here is a great video clip) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Bagan Sunset Panorama" - Burma. -- (September 28th, 2009)

"Pondering the meaning of lunch" - Akha Village, Northern Laos. -- (September 13th, 2009)
  • The Akha are a small ethnic group living in the hills bordering China in Northern Laos. On a trek to this village we learned they still hunt wild animals and occasionally eat dogs, but not their own dogs, they trade with neighboring villages and only eat dogs that were not from their own village! (photo taken in March 2008)
  • download and listen to my interview about Laos on the Amateur Traveler podcast: Amateur Traveler Episode 199 - Travel to Laos Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Shwedagon Paya Meditation" - Yangon, Burma. -- (September 6th, 2009)
  • Yangon [once Rangoon] is world famous for the "Shwedagon Paya", a golden spired pagoda/stupa. [Pagodas and Stupas in Burmese are called "Paya"]. All Burmese Buddhists hope to visit and pray at this site in their lifetime. Amazingly, every year the monastic community re-guilds the tower because it is pounded by 6-8 months of daily monsoonal rains, and loses much of its gilding! I visited during the monsoon, so everyone carried umbrellas, and we meditated under the eaves of side chapels in front of the central spire. (photo taken in August 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"U Bein Bridge Dusk" - Mandalay, Burma. -- (August 30th, 2009)
  • U Bein Bridge is a famous site that every photographer in Burma must approach. Like the Taj Mahal or Great Wall of China, it challenges you because you know everything has already been done! It is famous because it is made entirely of Teak, is 200 years old (with repairs), and is quite long, over a shallow lake. Well, I took the same photograph that millions before me have snapped - i suppose I can hope that the connection between the subjects speaks of friendship among monks! (photo taken in August 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Thoughtful Monk" - Mandalay, Burma. -- (August 23rd, 2009)
  • Burma is a magical country. The people, landscape, and pace of life make it a gem, while the government and political history make it a horrorshow. I concentrate, as always, on capturing beauty and idyllic scenery, however, I find myself converting all my best images into black and white - and that just feels right for this project! (photo taken in August 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Kolkata Rickshawallah" - India. -- (August 15th, 2009)
  • Passing time in Kolkata for a few days I decided to get to know the people working in my neighborhood, and making street portraits. This is one of the best ones. (photo taken in July 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Teak Portal" - Mandalay, Myanmar. -- (August 1st, 2009)
  • Beautiful Teak Doorway in a 200-year old Monastery (Shwe Un Bin Kyaung) built entirely of Teak, intricately carved in many places. Just one glimpse of the wonders of Burma/Myanmar!. (photo taken in August 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Daulatabad Fort Ruins and Views" - Maharashtra, India. -- (July 19th, 2009)
  • Last week I traveled with Shekhar's family to some sights in Maharashtra including this fort! Daulatabad fort is built atop an impressive large natural plateau of black stone. After climbing up many steps and crossing a bridge over a chasm/moat we got to a set of ruins. These ruins were just hanging on the edge of a cliff! It was an incredible sight that warmed the heart of this archaeologist-photographer and so I tried to capture the romanticism of the ruins and the great views across the plains beneath. (photo taken in July 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW

"Iwakuni Bridge" - Japan. -- (July 12th, 2009)

"Summer Treat" - Hokkaido, Japan. -- (June 14th, 2009)
  • In Japan, the cantelope is a very expensive, very special summer treat. In Hokkaido where they are grown they cost between $30 and $10,000! Yes, I am serious. Google it! This special roadside stand specializing in just cantelope with ice cream charged me $6 for a slice with ice cream, which is actually affordable by Japanese standards! "Taganga Beach Cove" - Colombia. -- (May 10th, 2009)
  • Turquoise Waters surrounded by succulents and reddish rocks at the edge of the Tayrona National Park on the North-Eastern portion of Colombia along the Caribbean coast. Gorgeous waters and a happy hippy-friendly coastal stretch. Taganga: still a fishing village, albeit less quiet and sleepy than it was before being discovered by backpackers. Beachfront thatched roof restaurants serve fresh fish and many travelers carry guitars and wear dreadlocks. Probably a lot like some parts of the Greek coast in the 60s and 70s! (photo taken in April 2009) Camera & Film: Canon EOS 40D - Digital RAW + Jpeg

"Visitors" - Cartagena, Colombia. -- (May 3rd, 2009)

"Need a light?" - Bali, Indonesia. -- (March 22nd, 2009)
  • Nothing like a smoking monkey to make you smile! The story behind this shot is that I was in the famous Monkey Forest park/ tourist attraction in Ubud, Bali when the curious monkeys, who like to steal anything shiny off tourists, grabbed a pack of cigarettes! I quickly reacted with my camera and shot a roll of them opening the pack, taking out every single cigarette, and trying to figure out what to do with them! (photo taken in May 2008) Camera & Film: Canon Digital Rebel XT 350 - Digital RAW

"Looking for God" - Batu Cave, Malaysia. -- (February 22nd, 2009)
  • These monkeys inhabit the hindu holy shrine of Batu Cave outside Kuala Lumpur. Since it is a temple and they eat all the prasad (edible offerings to a temple god), these monkeys must be quite religious! He is looking up at the only opening in the cave letting in natural light. Shot taken February, 2008 Camera & Film: Canon Digital Rebel XT 350 - Digital RAW
